How To Stay Fit When Sitting All Day!

Many individuals have no choice but to spend their entire day sitting at a desk. Prolonged sitting can lead to many different health effects, not the least of which is lack of exercise. Fortunately, if your job requires you to sit at a computer all day, there are some things you can do to stay healthy, get exercise, and break up your day.

PRACTICE GOOD POSTURE

Bad posture can be disastrous to your health when combined with 40 hours a week of sitting at a desk. Back problems, carpal tunnel syndrome, and neck pain are just a few of the many potential consequences. Make sure you sit up straight (never slouch!), and position your computer monitor at eye-level. You can find more detailed instructions on maintaining good posture throughout the internet. Just remember, posture is much more important than most people think.

STAND UP AND WORK

If you are able to stand up and still get your work done, you should strongly consider doing so. Even standing up for just 30 minutes every two hours can be a great way to break up the long hours of continuous sitting. One great option is to get a standing desk. Some desks can even change their height to act as both a standing desk and a sitting desk. If you can afford one, it may be a great option.

Even if you have to spend all day sitting, that does not mean you can’t still exercise.

BREAK UP YOUR DAY BY WORKING OUT DURING LUNCHTIME!

If you have never considered it, you may initially scoff at the idea of going to the gym during lunch. However, going to the gym is a great way to get your body moving again and release stress that accumulates from hours of sitting at a desk. If you get an hour for lunch, and the nearest gym is not too far away, you should have enough time to have a healthy snack, squeeze in a 20-30 minute workout, and drive back to work. You’ll be surprised how relaxed and reenergized you’ll feel once you get back to work.
